The Roll of the Drums by Jan Drexler

The Roll of the Drums by Jan Drexler is the second book in the series, The Amish of Weaver's Creek.    Ruby Weaver does not exactly fit in to her Amish community.  She is single and does not really have a problem with a woman remaining single.  Her friend Lovinia Fisher is married, but is ill and asks Ruby to promise to marry her husband after she dies.

Assuming she will never have to follow through on the promise, Ruby agrees.  Lovinia has also had her husband Gideon promise that he will marry.  Once she passes, both Ruby and Gideon really do not want to follow through on the promise made to Lovinia.  They come up with a compromise which requires Ruby to help out with Gideon's family, helping with the housework and caring for the children, but she will sleep at her sister's nearby home.  This does not exactly go well in the conservative community and Ruby and Gideon must make a decision to either follow through, or to break the promise.
