Ryan-James Hatanaka Shares His Favorite Christmas Memory | Christmas Interview Series

Mercy: Favorite Christmas Tradition?
RJ: Every year on December 23rd, my entire extended family gets together at my Grandparents’
home and we put on a concert. We sing carols and songs from my Grandparents’ youth. It is quite
a production: we have the singers, the guitarists, the drummer, the pianist - everyone gets
involved. We have an amazing time.

Mercy: Favorite Christmas memory?
RJ: My siblings and I are very close. When my brother and I were younger we used to sneak
downstairs on Christmas Eve and play video games. As my sisters got older, they started
sneaking down too. It’s a tradition that’s carried on. We have a lot of fun together.

Mercy: Favorite Christmas movie?
RJ: I love 'It's a Wonderful Life', and am looking forward to cueing it up again soon.
This year I’ve been asked to review 'Christmas in Montana' on The Hallmark Channel's Bubbly
Sesh podcast, so be on the lookout for that!

Mercy: Favorite Christmas song?
RJ: During our annual Christmas concert, my Grandfather always sings his amazing rendition of
'The Wild Colonial Boy'. While it may not be specific to the holidays, it has become a very
special part of our tradition.

Mercy: Must-have Christmas food?
RJ: The Japanese side of my family celebrates with traditional turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry
sauce... but they also have Inarizushi, which is my favorite.

Mercy: White or green Christmas?
RJ: One of my favorite things to do around the holidays is to play shinny (pick up hockey) with my
friends and family at our neighborhood rink. It's fantastic to see a light snowfall on the
surrounding trees as you fly across the ice.
