Present Danger by Elizabeth Goddard

Interview With Oliver Rice | Actor - Chesapeake Shores & Altered Carbon

When my family began watching the show Chesapeake Shores one of the entire family's favorite characters was that of Simon Atwater played by the immensely talented Oliver Rice.  We're all hoping his character returns when we *hopefully* get a season 5 of the show.  To those of you non-Hallmarkies that are reading this, you may recognize Oliver from his work on The Flash, DC's Legends Of Tomorrow, Take Two etc.  It was an honor to interview Oliver and I hope you all will enjoy reading this interview just as much as I did conducting it!

Mercy: Can you share a little bit about yourself?
Oliver: I was born in North Wales and spent the first year of my life living on a farm where my Dad was a shepherd. We moved to London and I grew up there before relocating to Vancouver Canada in 2012. I miss London but love my life with my son in beautiful Vancouver.

Mercy: What started your interest in becoming an actor?
Oliver: I loved drama as a kid but it was performing in plays whilst at law school that I decided to follow my passion for theatre and shift to acting. After graduating I went to The Oxford School of Drama and have been riding the highs and lows of the acting profession ever since.

Mercy: What is one of the major difference between England and Canada?
Oliver: There are the obvious geographical differences, Canada is massive! I drove to the Yukon when I first arrived and a map just doesn’t do justice to the scale of the country. Right now I am grateful for the relative tranquility in Canada. I just got back from visiting the UK and the political and social division and bitterness that exists is very sad.

Mercy: How are you most like and unlike your character of Simon Atwater on Chesapeake Shores?

Oliver: I think we are both pretty easy going, compassionate and eager to help people where we can. I don’t think I’m as patient as Simon though, I’m much more likely to speak my mind and go after what I want. Interestingly when the mysterious Caroline (played by Kimberley Sustad) showed up in season 3 she and Simon reminisced about jumping fully clothed into the river at Oxford after class. The writers didn’t know when they wrote it but I did the same thing (minus clothes) after class one day whilst I was at school in Oxford. Weird!

Mercy: What do you like to do in your free time?
Oliver: My son is 4 so we spend a lot of time hiking, swimming, playing soccer and adventuring in my free time. I also go to the theatre and movies a lot and follow the mighty Liverpool FC.

Mercy: What has been your favorite scene to film on Chesapeake Shores?
Oliver: I think my favourite scene was probably my final scene in season 4. It was so well written and a beautifully fitting end to Bree and Simon’s relationship.

Every scene I have with Emilie Ullerup is a joy but this one was so wrought with emotion, love and respect between the characters.

Mercy: If you could put together a dream cast with five actors/actress from any era, who would you choose?
Oliver: Mark Rylance, Charlie Chaplin, Helen Mirren,  Christoph Waltz and Natalie Portman

Kristen Hansen, Emilie Ullerup, Oliver Rice, & Daniel Paulsen

Mercy: If, like the fans are hoping, you come back to Chesapeake Shores whats a storyline you'd like for your character?
Oliver: I would love for Bree to visit Simon in England. She could stay with the Atwater’s and they could collaborate professionally and who knows what would happen from there...

Mercy: Any upcoming projects you can share with us?
Oliver: Altered Carbon season 2 comes out in February and I’ll be appearing in an episode of the new season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I’m currently busy working on a script with my writing partner Britt Irvin which will hopefully be made next year.
