Cardi Wong on Flip That Romance & Why He Does Hallmark Movies

Hallmarkies, today I have a special treat for you all! Many of you may remember that I interviewed Cardi Wong back in December after his role of Derek Wise in Road To Christmas (which was, incidentally, one of our family's favorite 2018 Hallmark Christmas movies!).

Since then, he's had some exciting roles and opportunities and today, we get to chat about his role in tomorrow night's Flip That Romance. So without further ado...

Mercy: Can you share a little bit of what you've been up to since we last chatted?
Cardi: Honestly, ever since Road to Christmas premiered, my career went to the next level. If you’re a longtime Hallmark fan, you’ll actually see that my first ever role was a small part in the Lacey Chabert movie All of My Heart. Flash forward to now, I had been offered the role Ethan in One Winter Proposal. I didn’t even have to audition for it, so that felt nice, and I really wanted to take that opportunity and run with it. I really have to thank the fans for the support that I’ve been given, and I’m looking forward to working on many more Hallmark Originals!

Mercy: Can you share a little bit about your character in Flip That Romance?
Cardi: My character's name is Kenny! He is the right hand man of Jules, he’s the contractor. He has known Jules since he was young, and they have been friends for a very long time.

He basically leads the building team to make sure everything is going according to schedule, but mostly, Kenny is there to make sure Jules' ambitious nature doesn’t get the best of the team and overwhelm the construction process.

Mercy: What was your favorite part of filming Flip That Romance?
Cardi: We filmed in Victoria, BC! I hadn’t been there in so long, and oh my gosh it's beautiful there. I was lucky to stay downtown and everything was within walking distance. BEAUTIFUL. It was like Vancouver without the constant traffic jams. Julie was an absolute pro and had so much insight in the industry. One night it took me over 8 takes to get a scene right, and I was pretty hard on myself. We end up finishing it, and we get in the van and I think Julie could tell I was feeling bad, and she picked up on it right away and just knew exactly what to say to make me feel better.

Also, I’m pretty sure Tyler Hynes was a stoic cowboy in another life.

Mercy: What is your favorite thing about working with Hallmark?
Cardi: One time, my friend told me that they play Hallmark movies in Children’s Hospitals during Christmas - that motivated and inspired me so much. Hallmark movies are for people who just need a nice way to unwind and not worry about how tough the world can be. That fills my heart with so much joy, and I want to be able to give that feeling to someone.

Mercy: What is one thing most people don't know about you?
Cardi: This question is a bit hard because I feel like I’m an open book. But, one hilarious thing I’ve actually been doing is dancing by myself in my house. Hahah, it's such an embarrassing thing to say, but I just turn on some tunes, dance around my house doing chores, or getting ready. It’s the best way to start my day. One song I’ve been playing is New Light by John Mayer and just busting out the moves. I’m sure it's a real treat for my neighbours looking out the window.

Mercy: If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?
Cardi: I would LOVE to have Steven Yuen (Glen from The Walking Dead) play an older version of me. I think he’s such a great actor, and we probably have a lot of similar traits.

Mercy: What is a role you haven't played that you'd like to?
Cardi: I think it's time for me to see myself in a love interest role. Especially as an Asian actor growing up, it only recently occurred to me that I didn’t get to see many Asian men be portrayed as the interest. It’s been long enough. I think I am ready for the challenge, and I feel like a lot of Hallmark fans have been asking for it as well.

Mercy: Any upcoming projects you can tell us about?
Cardi: I’ve actually just recently switched agencies! It’s been great. I’m just auditioning and continuing to work. Acting can be really tough because sometimes it's just out of your control, no matter how much effort you put in. That’s the business, fall down 9 times, get up 10.

Cardi, as always thank you for taking the time, it was a pleasure.  Readers, I know I'm not the only one who wants to see this actor in a leading role on Hallmark Channel, so join me in supporting him and asking Hallmark to do so!  He is a humble, talented actor who I always enjoy seeing on my TV screen.
Make plans to be watching Hallmark Channel tomorrow night to see Cardi, Julie, Tyler and the rest of the cast in Flip That Romance!
