Interview With Cardi Wong

Hey, y'all!

I know I'm not the only person who tuned in to the Hallmark Channel original movie, "Road To Christmas" this year and absolutely loved it!  This movie follows the story of Maggie and the Wise family, and it quickly became one of our family favorites of the new movies released this year.  One of the best parts of this movie (in my opinion) was the character of Derek Wise (portrayed by Cardi).  This is actually the first movie I've had a chance to see Cardi in, and I honestly cannot wait to see him in more Hallmark Channel films!  Without further ado, my interview with Cardi.

Mercy: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Cardi: I always have a tough time answering this one, I don't know where to begin, and going back to when I was a baby seems a bit far. However! Hi, Cardi here, I played Derek Wise on the Hallmark Original movie Road to Christmas. People like to ask me about my name, and if its short for anything. It's not, but I love when people give me cute little nicknames like Cardinal and Cardigan. I'm from Vancouver, and I've basically loved acting since high school. I LOVE making people laugh, and my jokes are definitely quantity over quality (One of them eventually has to hit).

Mercy: What made you decide to become an actor?
Cardi:  It was in my 20's that I really decided to go big or go home. My motto has always been "right place, right time" and so it just felt like I should be on this journey. Haven't looked back since.

Mercy: What is your favorite memory from filming Road To Christmas and is there a funny story from on set that you can share?
Cardi w/ Chad on the set of Road To Christmas
Cardi:   What the audience gets to see is the final product. But its SO interesting to know exactly what happened behind the scenes. For instance, the train scene where Derek gives his ticket away, it was actually the hottest day of the entire summer. There were so many technical elements that had to go into making it appear cold. We had two snow machines going at the same time, and certain lights had to shine just far enough away so that you can see the snow get caught in the updraft. I was SWEATING. Of course, I was perfectly safe, but in between every take our lovely hair and make-up crew would have to swoop in and dab my forehead. I couldn't exactly take my jacket off because the mic was taped to it, and not to mention we are renting the whole section of a train station so who knows how much time was afforded to us. Road to Christmas was my favorite all time on set experience. (Ps. One night I had like 3 grilled cheese sandwiches as a snack, it was great!)

Mercy: Whats one of your favorite Holiday traditions?
Cardi: It's gotta be my sisters family dinners. I get to see my niece and nephew grow up right before my eyes, and they get to hang out with the best uncle in the world. Fair trade off if you ask me!

Mercy: What is a must-have Holiday dish?
Cardi: This one is severely underrated in my books. There's the classic turkey dinner with the works, but the WARM APPLE PIE AND VANILLA ICE CREAM COMBO. Give me all of it, please.

Mercy: If you weren't an actor what would your dream job be?
Cardi:  Like any Canadian kid I played road hockey in the alleys, so being in the NHL would be so cool. They also do a lot for the community with events and donations that sometimes go under the radar. I play right now but just in a local league, its great exercise and I get to see a lot of my old friends from high school.

Mercy: How long have you played the ukulele and do you play any other instruments?
Cardi:  Fun fact, originally, Derek was written to be a guitar player! I learned a bit of it as a kid, but the production landed on the ukulele. It really hasn't been too long, its essentially the same thing, only fun sized. I still play it from time to time, the ukulele they used in the movie was actually my own. My best friend got it for me from Hawaii as a gift.

Mercy: What characteristics of Derek Wise can you most relate to or not relate to?
Cardi:  Derek and I draw a lot of similar parallels. We are both the youngest sibling, I have one sister, so we are both the "baby" of the family. Derek really had to grow up through the journey of the film, he had to get over his grudges because it wasn't just about him and what he wanted. It was about his deep love for his mom. My parents divorced when I was in school, so I stayed with my mom and I had to grow up real fast. Also, best hair and best smile, but my friends will argue that. Especially as an adopted son, Derek knows that family goes beyond blood. It's about the people who make you feel safe and warm while laughing so hard that you almost spit out your warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream.

Mercy: Any upcoming projects you can share with us?
Cardi: Yes! Super excited about this one, I'm not entirely sure how much I can say about it, but its a sequel to a popular Hallmark movie that takes place during the winter. They flew me out to Winnipeg and Calgary to shoot this last month, so follow along as the day gets closer! You can also catch me as lovestruck Spencer in the upcoming movie Christmas Pen Pals.

Cardi, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. It was a pleasure to have you on my blog.  I cannot wait to see your upcoming movies!  Readers, I hope you enjoyed!  Thank you for taking the time to check out this interview. If you have yet to see Road To Christmas it will be airing again this Saturday as well as a few more times throughout the Holiday season.
